Happiness through Hula

When you hear the word “hula, ” maybe you think about the tropical islands in Hawaii. However, not only people in Hawaii but also people in Iwaki, Fukushima, enjoy dancing the hula. Why is that?
Iwaki is known as a coal mining town long ago. When coal mines closed, the town’s economy went down. To stimulate it, the town started a female hula team. The team practiced hard to cheer up the locals and attract tourists to the area. Since then, hula has been a symbol of the town.
